Carapace shedding insect

While at a wildlife park watching a bird show, I couldn't help but notice the carapace of this insect stuck to the railing. I thought it was rather  interesting as I didn't know insects shed.

Anyway I got some information from some friends that it is most likely a cicada shell as it is part of their life cycle to shed.
